The lonely "@" does have an official name: "Commercial At Sign". But to me, "at" has a face, kind of like the "man in the moon", if it is fattened up a bit. And the face gives it a personality. Don't you think?
The flying @ sign encompassed by tildes could be thought of, I suppose, as just a fancy commercial at sign. But it is not. The flying at is not commercial; it is living art. It graphically represents the web as we know it today. It represents us, in fact: flying on the web, free to roam to millions of addresses around the world. Free to roam or stop in and chat, read, learn, correspond, participate, and make friends-- that's the Flying-At. Can you dig it?
I have officially trademarked it just so nobody else will do so. It even has its own web site, though I haven't found the time to develop it just yet.
I think you might agree, that since the Flying-At represents us and the free spirit of the web, it should never get into the wrong hands. Neither should it be referred to in print as the "flying @", using the commercial at sign; because that is a reference to its roots, rather than to Flying-At, the living art.
And so, be a friend, won't you? Help us keep the Flying-At safe and warm among friends. After all, if the network is the heart throb of the web, Flying-At is the spirit of the web.
Here's to the spirit of freedom, alive on the web -- Flying-At you!
